Free banking for certain cohorts at Ballina Credit Union

One of the most forward-looking credit unions in the west of Ireland has announced that students aged 16 to 26 years and people over 66 years of age who open a current account with debit card will be exempt from the €4 monthly fee and the majority of variable fees.

With third level starting back soon, this is the ideal time for students to open a current account and to be able to transact with Ballina Credit Union while at college.

Ballina Credit Union introduced its new current account product in July, and has already attracted a large number of users for this key member banking service.

The new current account includes a Mastercard debit card and facilitates contactless payments through digital wallets like Google Pay, Apple Pay and Fitbit Pay.

While some terms and conditions do apply to the student and older concession groups, this announcement from Ballina Credit Union will be a welcome relief for those two cohorts.

The decision by the board of directors of Ballina Credit Union to provide free banking services for these groups reflects the ethos of the movement as a self-help co-operative and locally-run financial organisation.

Ballina Credit Union operates within a common bond area that stretches north-south from Foxford to Dromore West and east-west from Bonniconlon to Bangor Erris, including towns such as Enniscrone, Crossmolina, Killala and Easkey.

It is easy to sign up to the new Ballina Credit Union current account. A low monthly fee of €4 covers unlimited euro point of sale and contactless transactions, unlimited mobile and online banking, and up to five ATM withdrawals per month.

You can apply online at www.ballinacu.ie or call in to the office at O’Rahilly Street, Ballina (near the post office).
