Death of widely popular Mayo road contractor, Mick O’Malley
The death has been occurred at his Castlebar residence of popular road and tarmacadam contractor Michael (Mick) O’Malley.
The news of his passing has cast a shadow of great sadness and loss in the community where he was held in such high esteem.
He was fondly known as ‘King of the Roads’ because of the many successful road contracts his family business was involved in over the decades.
Before setting up his business, he was a member of the staff of Mayo County Council.
Recently, Michael, his wife Nora, family and staff celebrated 40 years in business.
A native of Carrajames, Belcarra, he was an accomplished handballer in his youth and, in more recent years, was an active member of Castlebar Golf Club, serving the club with great distinction as men's captain in 2002 and club president in 2017.
He also loved cycling in his spare time.
A much-loved personality, Mick is deeply mourned by his loving wife of 55 years Nora (néé Grimes), daughters Hilda Dunne (Castlebar), Sharon Tolan (Castlebar), Michelle O’Malley (Lynch) (Ballyvary), Sinead McTigue (Castlebar), Laura Liverpool (Castlebar), his brother Joe O’Malley (Castlebar) as well as sons-in-law and thirteen grandchildren, to whom deepest sympathy is tendered.
His remains will be reposing at his residence in Ballynew, Turlough Road, Castlebar, tomorrow (Thursday) from 4 to 8 p.m. for family, neighbours and close friends.
Private removal on Friday at 11.45 a.m. to the Church of the Holy Rosary, Castlebar, via Old Turlough Road and Main Street, Castlebar for Funeral Mass at 12.30 p.m.
Michael will be laid to rest afterwards in the New Cemetery, Castlebar.
May his gentle soul rest in peace.
