Mayo cycling club issue statement regarding fatal accident

The Cunga Cycling Club, Cong, has issued a statement regarding a fatal accident during the club's leisure cycle event on Sunday.

It stated: "The Cunga Cycling Club regrets to advise that a participant lost their life as a result of an accident at our Cunga Ram leisure cycle event today.

"As with any serious incident or accident the club are now working with the gardaí to establish precisely what happened on this occasion.

"Anyone with information is asked to contact Clifden Garda Station on 095 22500, the Garda Confidential line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.

"The Cunga Cycling Club sends its sincere condolences to the family and friends of the deceased and requests their privacy be respected.

"We will be making no further statement at this time."

An Garda Siochaná confirmed that a fatal road traffic collision involving a car and a bicycle occurred at approximately 1.30 p.m. on Sunday on the R345 near Corr na Mona.

The cyclist, a man in his 50s, was pronounced dead at the scene. A car was also involved in the accident.
