Tenders invited for 3G rugby and soccer pitch at Mayo GMIT campus site

Mayo TD Alan Dillon has confirmed that the proposed development of a new 3G synthetic grass pitch, floodlight system and fencing at the GMIT Mayo Campus in Castlebar has moved to tender stated.

He welcomed the positive news and said it will be of enormous benefit to the third level facility and surrounding clubs.

The proposed development will include a full-sized all-weather 3G playing pitch tested to the highest IRFU/World Rugby and FIFA standards to allow competitive games to be played on it.

Deputy Dillon added: “The St Mary’s pitch, as locals know it, has seen many great days, but now is the time to invest in the future and enhance our sporting infrastructure in our county town.

"Back in 2019 a sum of €225,000 in regional sports capital funding was awarded to GMIT for this project by the then Fine Gael Minister for Sport Brendan Griffin.

"This project will certainly compliment the Lough Lannagh sporting centre of excellence and help support increased levels of participation within rugby and soccer.

"I look forward to the construction works commencing at GMIT Mayo Campus in the months ahead and wish all those tendering the very best.”
