Death of former Mayo GAA chairman Paddy Muldoon

The death has taken place of Paddy Muldoon, Ballinrobe Road, Westport, a former chairman of Mayo County GAA Board.

In a statement, Mayo GAA said it was deeply saddened to hear of the sudden passing of Paddy.

It stated: "Paddy was an active member of the Mayo County Board and was our current patron.

"He was a former chairperson of Mayo GAA as well as Central Council delegate, insurance officer, co-founder of the Green & Red Trust, team selector and chairperson of the Minor Board where during his tenure Mayo secured three All Ireland titles.

"Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis".

In a tribute to their club president, Westport GAA Club stated: "Paddy has been a cornerstone in both Westport GAA and Mayo GAA's development over many years occupying many roles and positions.

"Westport GAA cannot emphasise the debt of gratitude to Paddy and the Muldoon family for all that he has done for the club, to say that he has helped more than a few people along the way would not be an understatement.

"Here is a little background of Paddy's GAA involvement.

"The Aughagower native initially plied his trade with Islandeady, winning a west Mayo junior medal in 1959.

"But it didn’t take long until he returned to his roots in Westport town.

"In the mid-1960s he became chairman of the Westport club, a position he held for the following nine years.

"Paddy was manager of the successful Westport junior team that won the county junior championship and his infamous pep-talks: ‘I have three subs and I intend to use them’ are still fondly remembered.

"That same year he was a selector on the Mayo minor team.

"In 1971 the Mayo minors won the All-Ireland and Paddy was also on the line that day as a selector.

"Paddy was also a selector for the Mayo senior team in the early seventies.

"In 1980 he was elected chairman of the Mayo County Board and during his 8-year term Mayo won two Connacht senior titles, an All-Ireland Under-21 title and a minor title.

"When he stepped down he headed straight for Croke Park and to Central Council where he remained for many years.

"Paddy has been a member of Mayo County Board in numerous capacities for 50 years or so and is currently president of Westport GAA.

"To Judy, Ed, Sinead, John, relations, colleagues and friends we offer our deepest condolences. Ar dheis de go raibh a anam dilis."
