TG4 takes the plunge and goes live with cliff diving from Mayo

TG4 has announced the live broadcast of the 2021 Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series this Sunday, September 12, at 3 p.m.

Twenty-four athletes (12 women and 12 men) will dive in the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series' 12th season. These incredible athletes will push themselves to their limits by diving from heights of up to 27m, at speeds in excess of 85km/h into the sea below.

The cliffs at Downpatrick Head in north Mayo will play host to a brand-new launchpad, where the brilliant divers will continue their pursuit of the King Kahekili trophy.

This will be the fifth time the competition has taken place in Ireland since 2012. The event has previously been held in Inis Mór in the Aran Islands, Co. Galway, and Dún Laoghaire, Co. Dublin.

TG4 has previously broadcast the deferred coverage and highlights from the event in Ireland but this year is the first time that the competition will be shown live.

Spórt TG4 and Bloc TG4 (TG4’s short-form video content hub for 18+ audiences) will also have exclusive behind the scenes action from the event across its social media channels on the September 11 and 12.

TG4’s head of sport, Rónán Ó Coisdealbha, said: “We are delighted to able to bring this exciting event live to the TG4 audiences for the very first time. Since 2009 the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series has taken place in the most remarkable of locations, and Downpatrick Head is no exception.

“The epic scenery of the west of Ireland coastline teamed with the wildness of the Atlantic Ocean will be make for a great afternoon of extreme sporting entertainment on what could potentially be a historical weekend for Mayo in other sporting endeavours.”
