Official opening of Mayo's Old Irish Goat Visitor Centre and Sanctuary

THE Old Irish Goat Visitor Centre and Sanctuary has been officially opened in Mulranny.

Visitors to the centre can experience the iconic story of the Old Irish Goat through the ages, and learn about the conservation work of the Old Irish Goat Society.

The centre also showcases Mayo's farming history and modern day efforts to conserve the genetic signature of this fascinating animal.

LEADER funding of €154,456 has also been announced for the Gift of Hands craft shop, which is based within the centre. The contracts are now signed for this funding. The craft shop will showcase and sell unique handmade gifts produced by 14 Mayo crafters and artists.

The centre also has a community meeting and office space to deliver on community objectives, from saving Old Irish Goats to delivering on climate action.

Deputy Michael Ring was on hand to perform the official opening, where he stated: “I am delighted to officially open this wonderful visitor centre. Not only will it be a tourism attraction it will be a unique biodiversity initiative connected to the Wild Atlantic Way and the Great Western Greenway and I wish them every success.”
