Personal social media attacks on members of Mayo GAA squad condemned

"Some of the comments are beyond shocking"

A Mayo elected representative has condemned the personal attacks across social media on members of the Mayo senior squad and management in the aftermath of their defeat to Tyrone in yesterday's All-Ireland SFC final at Croke Park.

Councillor Brendan Mulroy, cathaoirleach of the West Mayo Municipal District, hit out: "I appreciate we are hurting today but some of the comments on social media are beyond shocking.

"Personal attacks on players and management are way out of order.

"These guys give massive commitment and time to their county and deserve our support.

"A small bit of humanity goes a long way.

"Up Mayo and thanks lads for all you do for this county."

Councillor Mulroy intends to raise his concerns at tomorrow's statutory meeting of Mayo County Council.

Speaking to The Connaught Telegraph, he said: "This kind of behaviour cannot be tolerated. It's completely out of control.

"It was very disappointed to read some of the comment on Facebook and Twitter last night and again today. I would appeal to those responsible for posting them to take them down.

"They are very hurtful to the people being targeted and their families. This should have no place in sport and will turn young players from turning out for their counties."
