Discussions about proposed Mayo GAA centre of excellence ongoing

SOME clarification on the proposed development of a Mayo GAA centre of excellence in Castlebar will be available by the end of the month.

A meeting to further discuss the project is due to take place between Mayo County Council and the county GAA board next week.

The issue was raised at the monthly meeting of the council yesterday (Monday) by Councillor Michael Kilcoyne who had requested a report on the stalled centre project, which is proposed to be located at Lough Lannagh in Castlebar.

Both he and Councillor Blackie Gavin stressed that this is a priority project for the town, with his colleague making the point that it was going on since 2018 and that 'isn't good enough'.

“It needs to be signed, sealed and delivered once and for all,” Councillor Gavin told the meeting.

Chief executive Kevin Kelly said it had been his intention to update members in September, though not necessarily at the monthly meeting.

A meeting had taken place with the GAA, he explained, and there is a further one scheduled for next week.

He would come back to the members after that to update them.

A number of internal meetings and discussions have also taken place.

Mr. Kelly said he understood the priority that has been attached to this project.
