Mayo athletics club makes appeal for cross country race to go ahead

An athletics club in west Mayo has made an urgent appeal for someone to step forward to run its national schools cross country race.

Phillipa Renton, vice-chairperson of Westport junior Athletics Club said: "We desperately need someone that would be interested in taking on the West Mayo National Schools Cross Country race.

"If no one takes over, the local schools cannot enter and thus the schools cross country league will be non existent in the area just like the community games.

"It involves getting the permit, contacting schools in the west region to let them know when it’s on, marking the course and organising that day.

"Full advice and support will be given to those who take it on. Full equipment for cross country course for west Mayo national schools (poles, rope etc.) which belongs to Westport will be given to set up the course.

"If someone kindly decides to take it on and continue the tradition please privately message Westport Athletics Club and contact details will be given."
