Time extended for works on Mayo historic building

BALLINTUBBER Abbey Trust has been given a time extension to carry out works at the historic building.

Mayo County Council has approved a planning application seeking an extension of duration for partial re-roofing of the cloister and construction of a new wing within the existing east range ruin, to provide parish and visitor facilities at Ballintubber Abbey, including a new lift and stair access to the existing dorter.

Minor alterations and conservation repairs to the existing ruin and abbey building, as well as a new waste-water treatment system, are also part of the plan.

In their submission to planners, the Trust explained how a five-year extension of planning permission was being sought.

The project has received funding under the Rural Regeneration and Development Fund but they had been unable to commence works due to the economic downturn associated with the Covid-19 pandemic.

As yet, no development has commenced on-site. The council had no objection to extending the period for the works to take place.
