Planning blow for west Mayo eco tourism proposal

A PROPOSED eco pods development in Mulranny has been turned down by An Bord Pleanála.

A decision of Mayo County Council to grant permission for the construction of six self-contained eco pods, with an amenity/shower facility building, at Mallranny, Westport, was appealed to the board.

The board refused permission for two reasons.

It was not satisfied that the development would not adversely affected the integrity of the Clew Bay Complex Special Area of Conservation.

Having regard to the location of the site, in an area prone to coastal and fluvial flooding, and on the basis of submissions received, it considered there remained an absence of adequate information relating to drainage on site, the risk of flooding and measures to address any risk.

The proposed development, which is not water compatible, in that it includes sleeping accommodation, would constitute an unacceptable risk of flooding, to future occupants, which would be prejudicial to public health and safety and contrary to the proper planning and sustainable development of the area.
