Big win for Breaffy in senior championship opener

Breaffy were the big winners in the Connacht Gold Mayo SFC today, beating The Neale by 1-23 to 0-14 in their Group 4 game this afternoon.

Tommy Conroy put in a great display for the visitors, landing nine points of The Neale's total, but Breaffy ran the show, with Aidan O'Shea in superb form.

In the same group, Garrymore's whirlwind start went a long way towards ensuring victory over Kiltane, the final score reading 3-8 to 1-6 in the south Mayo club's favour.

Belmullet also enjoyed a blistering start in their Group 2 encounter with Charlestown in east Mayo but eventually the home side reeled them in and were on the verge of winning until Ryan O'Donoghue drew the Erris men level with a late free.

Elsewhere, a strong start and a rampant finish gave Westport maximum points following their 1-16 to 1-8 victory over Ballaghaderreen in Group 3.

Louisburgh and Mayo Gaels were big winners in the Egan Jewellers IFC, the former winning by 2-9 to 0-6 away to Ardnaree in Group 3 and the latter surprising many with a 2-14 to 1-10 victory over Hollymount/Carramore in Group 2.

Also in Group 3, Kilmaine showed they are well equipped to cope with intermediate football following their elevation from the junior ranks last year as they beat Kiltimagh by 2-11 to 0-14.

The performance of the day, however, came in Group 4 as Castlebar Mitchels B recovered from a seven-point deficit at half-time to win by three in the end at home to Ballinrobe, Mark Cunningham with a late goal to put them two ahead before Barry Redmond added on a wonderful free.

In the TF Royal Hotel Mayo Exclusive JFC, there were wins for Kilmeena, Kilmovee Shamrocks, Ballycastle and Shrule/Glencorrib, while Cill Chomáin and Achill played out a draw.
