Anger over delay with new Mayo housing scheme due to 'unforeseen issues'

Anger has been expressed over the delay in the construction of 25 social houses at Lios Na Circa, Milebush Road, Castlebar.

Simon Shevlin, senior housing officer, Mayo County Council, explained to elected members of Castlebar Municipal District the delay was caused by issues that arose following the tendering process.

“The issues involved additional costs. What occurred could not have been foreseen.

"We were subsequently advised by the Department of Housing to seek a new tender.”

Councillor Michael Kilcoyne said it is really sad what has happened in respect of the project at a time when rents have increased by up to 90% in some cases.

“This plan was first rolled out three years ago and we were told work was going to start last March.

"I believe there has been a failing by the council in this matter and we are no left in a situation where the project is going to cost more due to rising construction costs.”

Mr. Shevlin said the council is also working with an agency to provide 15 additional housing units at Lois na Circa for people with disabilities.
