Delivering greenway for Louisburgh a top priority

THE absolute priority of delivering the greenway to Louisburgh and out to Roonagh pier, to service the islands, was spelled out at a council meeting held in the town.

A former councillor, Austin Francis O'Malley, addressed the historic meeting in the parochial hall - the first time a Westport-Belmullet Municipal District meeting has been held in Louisburgh.

Still working hard for his community, he had a list of priority projects for the Louisburgh area, the greenway being number one.

Other key projects include cycle/walkways to the beaches at Carrowmore and Old Head, a river walk along the Bun Abhainn, a car park, for which a suitable site has been identified, year-round toilet facilities at the beaches, as well as bike stands, speed ramps in Killeen village, and some tweaking of traffic flow at Carrowmore beach where access was an issue this summer at peak season. An option to have an one-way system to service Carrowmore had been identified, he said.

Highlighting some level of frustration at how long it is taking to extend the greenway to the area, Mr. O'Malley said it would be a major boost to the local economy and also the greater Mayo area.

Elected representatives were supportive of his requests, with Councillor Paul McNamara saying the greenway is 'vital' for Louisburgh and is 'top of the agenda'. And he agreed that essential infrastructure such as toilets needs to be provided at beaches, to facilitate visitors but also the local communities who use them year round.

Councillor Christy Hyland said talks were taking place with landowners and home owners about the greenway and they had to respect them.

The cathaoirleach, Councillor Brendan Mulroy, said they will do their best to ensure it will happen as it is a 'must' and he asked for patience.
