Belmullet cause an upset in the Mayo senior championship

Belmullet injected huge excitement into the Connacht Gold Mayo SFC with victory over defending county champions Knockmore in their Group 2 game in Erris this afternoon.

Daithi Cosgrove scored both Belmullet goals while Ryan O'Donoghue was unerring from frees in their 2-4 to 1-4 victory in inclement weather.

The result leaves Belmullet in a good place heading into the final group game against Aghamore in a few weeks' time, while Knockmore will need to get a result against Charlestown, which won't be easy.

Charlestown, who drew their opening Group 2 game against Belmullet last weekend, won a bruising east Mayo derby in Aghamore yesterday evening in a game played under lights. Two goals from Matthew Lenehan proved crucial as Sarsfields secured a two-point victory on a 2-13 to 4-5 scoreline.

Both Group 3 games were played this afternoon and Westport qualified for the quarterfinals with a slender victory over Castlebar Mitchels, winning by 0-11 to 1-6.

In the other game, Ballaghaderreen kept their quarterfinal hopes alive while ending Balla's at the same time, though they were a tad fortunate to come out on the right side of a 3-10 to 1-15 result.

Meanwhile, Mayo Gaels and Louisburgh underlined their Egan Jewellers IFC title credentials with wins over Burrishoole and Kilmaine respectively, while Kiltimagh still have a chance of reaching the knockout stages thanks to a one-point victory at home to Ardnaree (0-14 to 3-4).
