Mayo TD hits out at defacing of plaque in honour of Michael Gaughan

The actions of those responsible for defacing the plaque erected by the community of Ardnaree at Healy Terrace in Ballina to remember local Michael Gaughan have been condemned as deplorable.

Mayo TD Rose Conway-Walsh said the incident has caused immense disappointment and outrage.

She explained a heavy instrument was used in extensively damaging the plaque.

"This was an unacceptable act of vandalism and I feel particular sorry for the community which went to such efforts in erecting the plaque.

"It was not erected as a political gesture but to honour one of their own people. What has happened has caused great hurt and outrage.

"I hope CCTV and information from the public will help gardai find the perpetrators," she stated.

The plaque was erected last year in honour of Michael Galghan who died on hunger strike at Parkhurst Prison, Isle of Wight, on June 3, 1974, at the age of 24.

The inscription on the plaque reads: "I die proudly for my country and in the hope that my death will be sufficient to obtain the demands of my comrades.

"Let there be no bitterness on my behalf, but a determination to achieve the new Ireland for which I gladly die.

"My loyalty and confidence is to the IRA and let those of you who are left carry on the work and finish the fight."

The well-known song, Take Me Home to Mayo, was written by Seamus Robinson in honour of Michael Gaughan.
