Newport regeneration moving towards planning stage

A PLANNING application in respect of the Newport regeneration project is due to be published this month.

The project includes an enterprise centre, public realm works and cyclists hub.

In an update, local councillors were told consultants are working towards publication of part 8 planning applications in early October.

Funding of €355,764 has been allocated to the project under the Rural Regeneration and Development Fund (RRDF).

In other RRDF projects, councillors were told that in respect of the Westport Library, civic offices and community hub, the procurement of consultants has commenced.

In Belmullet town, application was lodged in July for an ambitious project which includes the following elements: redevelopment of the old technical school (An Sean Teic) as a community hub for education, family resource centre, community groups and the Irish language; provision of a new open public library on Main Street; expansion of existing town facilities and infrastructural services; provision of town centre social housing units for the elderly; and extension of facilities in the G-Teic for industry.

Elsewhere in north Mayo, the Glencastle village enhancement works commenced in August and have a completion time of two months.

The Inver village enhancement works project is 90% complete. A contractor for a pedestrian crossing is on site and is progressing with the works.

In respect of the Canal House, Belmullet, an application for TVRS funding was submitted in mid July to redevelop the Canal House as a youth facility and multi-purpose centre.
