Children’s sensory hair salon opens in Mayo

Lindsay O'Flaherty has opened a kid's sensory hair salon behind her home at Liscromwell, Castlebar.

She told The Connaught Telegraph: “I noticed there wasn't anything of its kind in Mayo so I knew it was needed.

“I have a child on the spectrum who struggles with haircuts and having anyone touch his hair like many other kids on and off the spectrum.

“It can be a very scary process for them as they're entering a barber’s or salon with possibly many grown-ups around, loud talking, clippers and hair dryers going, and you have to sit and wait your turn before the hair cut begins.

“My salon had helped make the process an enjoyable, fun experience. I have filled the room with toys and bright colours. I give the child as much time as they need to feel comfortable, have a look around, get to know me.

“I explain everything I'm going to do before starting with the haircut. I made many new little friends in the process.

“Mums and dad can relax knowing their little one is in good hands. I also have little goody bags to top off the visit so, at the end of it, it has been quite a fun experience and they are happy to come back again.”

Little Locks kids hair salon is open Monday to Saturday and Lindsay can be contacted at (089) 4558477.
