Mayo senator welcomes funding for free contraception

Mayo Senator Lisa Chambers has welcomed funding provided for free contraception in Budget 2022.

She said: “I am overjoyed to see that provision has been made to introduce free contraception, something I have long fought hard for.

“The free contraception includes all forms of contraception that are currently covered by the GMS scheme and the plan is to introduce it next August.

"Detailed planning is currently underway in the Department of Health.

“This service will cover, for 17-25 year old cohort, the cost of prescription contraception, subject only to the €1.50 prescription charge, the cost of fitting and removal of chosen forms of long-acting reversible contraception for which this is required, and GP consultations.

“Women’s health has been a priority for the government. We have seen significant investment in women’s health across all sectors since the Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly took over the post.

“Budget 2022 has allocating unprecedented funding of €31 million to investments in women’s health."
