Drive to transform Mayo town's derelict sites into 26 new homes by 2024

Efforts are underway to transform derelict sites in Castlebar into 26 housing units by 2024.

The target has been outlined by Simon Shevlin, senior housing officer with Mayo County Council.

The first phase involves work on four units, for which a Part 8 notice will be placed before the elected members of the local municipal district early next year.

This will be followed by 16 further new homes on acquired sites to be completed in 2024, with six more later that year.

Mr. Shevlin said an additional 60 units are being worked on with approved housing bodies in respect of greenfield sites in the town.

In other developments which will help address local housing needs, Tuach Housing is to start building an eight-house project at Chestnut Grove in January.

Co-Operative Housing is due to commence works on a 20-house scheme at Humbert Way.

The Peter McVerry Trust is to proceed with an eight-house project at Ellison Street before the end of the year with funding now in place.

An additional 36 houses will also be constructed at Lios na Circe, Milebush, Castlebar, to be ready by the end of 2023.

The contract signing for 22 of the units, to be carried out by Mayo County Council, is expected to take place in November.

Outside of the county town, nine new houses are in the pipeline for Carnacon and 11 for Ballyvary, both schemes to be finished in 2023.
