Progress on proposed Ballina Flood Relief Scheme

AN update has issued in relation to the Ballina Flood Relief Scheme with a number of issues presently being assessed and addressed.

Deputy Dara Calleary explained the work taking place: A nature-based catchment management study has been undertaken with an initial draft of the study and a workshop held with the project steering group on October 7. Once the comments received are incorporated into an updated draft of the study, feedback will also be sought from external stakeholders, including EPA, LAWPRO, the local authority, NPWS and the Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment.

“The next steps will include data collection and in that regards the project team have issued a call for photographs, videos, sketches or any other relevant information regarding previous flood events. These can be sent via email to ballinafrs@rpsgroup.com.”

He continued: “I am please also to have been informed that a contractor has been appointed to undertake ground investigation works. A road opening licence is presently being obtained with a view to these works taking place in late October and November.

“As well as this, further ecological survey works will be conducted during the remainder of 2021.”

Commented Deputy Calleary: “I am satisfied that some progress is being made and will continue to work with the stakeholders to ensure that momentum is maintained.

“We need a solution to the issues that have caused such devastation to homeowners in the Bachelors Walk, Arbuckle Row, Clare Street and Howley Terrace areas of Ballina – and I will continue to keep the pressure on.” Progress on proposed Ballina Flood Relief Scheme
