Mayo school faces possible five-year wait for broadband

A SCHOOL in north Mayo could be waiting for five years until it gets a broadband connection.

Currently, the only way to get a signal at Kilmurry National School is to go outside with your device.

The lack of connectivity at the school has been raised by local Councillor Michael Loftus.

He visited the National Broadband Ireland (NBI) information kiosk in Ballina this week to enquire about the broadband for Kilmurry National School. He was told it would be '2025 to 2026'.

Councillor Loftus is unhappy with the delay in the roll-out of broadband for the area.

At this month's meeting of Mayo County Council he called for priority to be given by NBI to schools in Mayo, especially those in rural areas like Kilmurry that don’t have any signal.

Highlighting the issue on his social media, with a photo from the school of efforts to get a signal, he said: “No school should have to go outside to get coverage as in this picture.”
