Commencement of procurement process for ED at Mayo University Hospital confirmed

- Procurement process likely to be completed in November 2021 with design team appointed by end of year

- Planning permission likely to be sought in Q3 of 2022 with contractor tender evaluation to take place by end of 2023;

- Expansion to Emergency Department and Medical Assessment Unit to include enabling works to minimise impact on existing ED.

Mato TD Alan Dillon has welcomed confirmation from the HSE Capital and Estates office that their Galway office has commenced the procurement process for the engagement of design team services for an extension to the emergency department at Mayo University Hospital,

This will allow for the formal design works to commence on delivery of the proposed expansion and Medical Assessment Unit at the Castlebar facility.

It is expected the procurement process will be completed by the end of November and a design team will be in place before the end of this year.

Deputy Dillon said: “It is expected the design team will be in a position to apply for planning permission during the third quarter of 2022 with the relevant contractor tender evaluations to take place by end of 2023, which will also include the awarding of the construction tender.

"It is worthwhile highlighting that some internal and external enabling works will be required to the existing emergency department to ensure minimal disruption to their important work.

"There will be a phased construction of the emergency department expansion and medical assessment unit to prevent unnecessary disruption to existing services and patient care.

“The expansion for the emergency department will be in an adjacent courtyard and will require some reconfiguration of the existing ED.

"This is an exciting project for Castlebar and hugely beneficial for the people of Mayo and beyond.

"I expect the project to be completed in late 2025 or early 2026 and it is important the project continues to be delivered at pace and without delay.

"I recently outlined to HSE CEO, Paul Reid, at a recent meeting of the Oireachtas Committee of Public Accounts that the project is a major priority of mine and must be delivered with speed.

"Separately in Dáil Éireann, I invited Health Minister, Stephen Donnelly, to visit Mayo University Hospital to demonstrate the need for an expanded Emergency Department at the hospital and I will continue to prioritise progress on this issue.”
