Mayo homeowners affected by pyrite staging demonstration

MAYO homeowners affected by pyrite are staging a demonstration this Thursday, October 21, at 11 a.m. at the home of Noel O’Boyle in Crossmolina (F26 RY91).

The aim is to increase awareness of the huge number of homes affected by pyrite in Mayo.

The event will cover the number of homes impacted in Mayo, the lack of rental accommodation in the county, and will highlight the negative impact this is having on the mental health of all families, and especially children.

The current estimate by the working group report is that 1,000 homes in Mayo are affected by pyrite, however this is expected to be much higher.

The demonstration will be held at Noel’s home, which is badly affected by pyrite and is approved to be demolished.

Noel's garden will be covered with toy/cardboard houses to represent the number of homes in Mayo impacted and the fact there is no where for these families to go.

There will also be toy diggers, tractors and lorries which children will need to become accustomed to due to the number of homes to be demolished.

The Mayo pyrite action group will also have children (including children with special needs) tell their stories of how pyrite is impacting their lives.

Mental health professionals who work with the youth will explain the detrimental impact it is having on their mental health.

Also sharing their stories will be adults whose lives are affected, including Noel O’Boyle.

Homeowners are currently awaiting news from government on the updates to the scheme and this is increasing their stress as there is no end date.

The scheme, say the action group, is now almost stalled in Mayo.
