Climate strike to be staged in Mayo on Friday

Fridays for Future Mayo has organised a socially-distanced climate strike to take place on Friday as part of a global day of action.

It will be held at the Octagon, Westport from 1 to 2 p.m.

If you have been in close contact with a case of Covid or have symptoms, please do not attend.

“I encourage everyone who can to join us this Friday,” says Maude Cullen-Mouze, an organiser of the strike.

“The UN climate summit in November is a critical opportunity for action that leaders must take.

"The catastrophic effects of the climate crisis are already being felt from the fires in the western United States to the floods in Europe and typhoons in Asia.

"These effects will only get worse if we fail to act, spelling disaster for billions of people.

"Emissions have continued to rise despite pledges by our leaders to reduce them.

"This is unacceptable and we demand sufficient action be taken to limit global warming to 1.5°C and ensure a just transition for the most vulnerable in our society.

"At the UN Conference of Parties (COP26), world leaders must deliver more than the empty promises that previous summits have given us."

Additionally, the COP26 Coalition is organising a global day of action on Saturday, November 6, and a local protest will be held at Market Square, Castlebar, from 1 to 2 p.m.
