Improved public transport proposals for Mayo

THE National Transport Authority (NTA) have published their proposed routes under the Connecting Ireland strategy. It features new and increased services for communities across Mayo.

The proposals include improved frequency on bus routes between Ballina, Foxford, Swinford and Charlestown to Dublin, and routes from Mayo to Galway benefiting Ballina, Westport, Castlebar, Ballinrobe, Claremorris and Ballyhaunis. Improved services are also planned between Mayo and Sligo benefiting Ballina, Enniscrone and Charlestown.

Under the proposals, local communities such as Bonniconlon, Crossmolina, Lahardane, Killala, Ballycastle, Belmullet, Bangor and Blacksod are all set to benefit, with new bus services being proposed.

It is also proposed to increase the frequency on route 423 from Clifden to Westport with a minimum service of five return trips a day. On route 440, it is proposed to alter the route to serve Turlough with a minimum service of four return trips Monday to Saturday and three return trips on Sunday.

Highlighting the proposals, Deputy Dara Calleary said this is also an opportunity to seek an early morning train service from Ballina to Dublin.

Deputy Calleary urged all affected residents and communities to engage with the public consultation process, which is now open.
