Mayo call for zero tolerance approach to drink and needle spiking

A Mayo Oireachtas member has called for urgent action following growing reports of people having their drinks spiked in numerous venues across the country - including an increasing number of spiking by injection incidents.

Senator Lisa Chambers commented, “We need a zero tolerance policy in relation to drink and needle spiking.

"This is gender-based violence, and as is so often the case, the focus is on the actions of the victim.

“A conversation now needs to be had, not alone around prevention measures but also around accountability.

"We must tackle the root of the issue, discuss the cultural attitudes that drive sexual violence and make it clear that this deplorable act is illegal and will be punished accordingly.

“The focus must be on the perpetrators of these crimes and I would encourage anyone who sees anything suspicious while out socialising to report it immediately to security or staff at the venue as well as the gardaí.

"We need to be proactive in tackling this and every incentive should be explored to deter this appalling act."
