Number of Mayo motorists issued with speeding fines revealed

Up to 12,214 Mayo motorists were issued with fixed penalty notices for speeding over the past three years, the Department of Justice has revealed.

A total of 3,010 were issued in 2018, 5,393 in 2019 and 3,911 last year.

Of those, 10,677 paid their €80 fine within the specified period of time.

However, 356 fines were not paid on time, resulting in them being doubled to under the third payment option.

It is understood the remaining 1,286 cases were dealt with through the courts system.

Deputy Catherine Murphy has asked for a breakdown of the the number of drivers who had cases dismissed and struck out by the district court during the three-year period in question.

She also requested, by way of a parliamentary question, the number of motorists who recorded convictions for speeding and the penalties imposed as well as those struck out due to summons not being served.

The Court Services does not hold complete statistical information on the reasons for any cases being struck out, Dáil Eireann was informed.
