GMIT president Dr. Orla Flynn

Prestigious distinction for Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology

Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT) has been named Institute of Technology of the Year in the new edition of the Sunday Times Good University Guide (2022), published today.

GMIT is among 19 Irish Higher Education institutes featured in the guide, all of which are ranked on eight key performance measures.

The publication is complemented by a fully searchable website containing tables and profiles of all the institutes.

GMIT won the top IoT accolade based on multiple achievements this past academic year (2020/21) such as TU designation approval, academic restructuring, collaboration with business and industry in the development of new courses and facilities, high levels of student engagement, a four-place rise in the overall rankings, and the awarding of the coveted Athena SWAN Bronze accolade.

Commenting on the success of Galway’s two third-level colleges this year, Alastair McCall, education editor, Sunday Times, said: “GMIT embodies everything good about the institutes of technology.

"Outstanding business and industry links translate into good employment options for graduates, while high levels of student engagement are evidence of an institution in tune with its undergraduates.

"With technological university title to come next year, the future is looking rosy for GMIT. Our award is recognition of the effort that has gone in to get the institution to this point and of our expectation that this is just a springboard to further success.”

GMIT president Dr. Orla Flynn stated: “This welcome recognition highlights the huge commitment of all our staff who consistently strive for excellence in teaching and learning, in research and in our engagement with enterprise.

"We enter 2022 - the golden jubilee of our establishment - with the aim of becoming a technological university with partners IT Sligo and Letterkenny IT and delivering even more for our students and many stakeholders across the region and beyond.”
