Mayo branch of Birdwatch resume activities

WITH the ending of Covid-19 restrictions the Mayo Branch of Birdwatch Ireland is active once again.

Branch PRO George Keegan says plans are at an advanced stage for two exciting events over the winter months.

First up will be a Zoom talk on November 24 at 7.30 p.m. entitled ‘A Garden Bird Survey’, given by Brian Burke, conservation officer and Irish Bird Survey coordinator with Birdwatch Ireland. The talk will be divided into two parts - firstly everything you need to know about feeding the birds in your garden, while the second part will focus on the Irish Garden Bird Survey and the history of what is Ireland’s longest running and biggest wildlife survey.

It will be open to both members and non-members. All you need to do to register is send your details by email to birdwatchmayo@yahoo.com.

Then, at the end of January, an outing is scheduled to take place from Westport to discover the birds of Clew Bay. This will be open to all ages and levels of bird watching experience. Full details will be announced closer to the date.

George points out that becoming a member of Birdwatch Ireland is a great way to learn more about the birds around us and will help also towards their conservation in what has become a critical situation due to dwindling numbers in many species. It would also make a perfect Christmas gift for any member of the family.

By joining and paying a subscription new members receive a special pack containing beautiful wall posters, a membership gift, plus the current issue of ‘Wings’, a glossy magazine full of features, colour photos and up to date news on all aspects of bird life around the country. It is published four times a year by Birdwatch Ireland.
