South Mayo looped lake walk nearing completion

A NEW looped walk around Mayfield Lake in Claremorris is nearing completion.

The three-kilometre walk includes a 600-metre boardwalk and fishing access points to the lake.

It is scheduled to be completed in December, members of Mayo County Council's tourism committee were told at an online meeting today.

Clare Lake Development Committee, who were the driving force behind the five-kilometre McMahon Park/Clare Lake walks, which takes in the Land of Giants, were also instrumental in delivering this project, working with land owners, and other agencies, including the forestry and fisheries bodies and South West Mayo Development Company.

Tourism officer Anna Connor said the trails above attract 218,000 users every year.

The Mayfield Lake project involves a total investment of €345,000, with Leader funding of €161,000 awarded 12 months ago. Works commenced in August.

It will be another fantastic amenity for the community, said Ms. Connor, bringing the total walks distance in the area to eight kilometres.

In the future there are plans for interpretive signage highlighting biodiversity on the trail, rest and play areas, and water-based activities.

Committee member Councillor Michael Kilcoyne hailed it as an 'excellent' project and a perfect example of what a community, working with the council, can deliver.
