Mayo artists invited to connect at Creative Coffee event series

CREATIVE Coffee is a new monthly event for artists interested in connecting with others in a relaxed and welcoming space. Artists of all disciplines and interests are invited to attend the inaugural session which takes place at 10.30 a.m. on Monday, December 13, at the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar.

Creative Coffee will be held monthly in 2022, with each session being led by a different artist across a variety of art forms.

The first guest speaker is visual artist and Bolay residency recipient Maria McKinney. An artist from Donegal, McKinney creates work through a range of media including sculpture, installation, photography and video. She’s based in Mayo for two months while her residency at the Linenhall is completed.

Local creatives are invited to gather, get inspired and meet other artists as Maria gives a brief overview of her residency activities, particularly her work with Irish Moiled farmers in Mayo, engagement with the Drumlin landscape, conversations with geological and heritage researchers in GMIT, and Heritage Mayo and the Creative Schools project with Foxford National School.

In these challenging times, Creative Coffee aims to give artists a chance to re-energise amongst their peers. Creatives in any artform, at all levels of skill and experience are welcome to attend. Advanced booking via www.thelinehall.com is recommended.

MAYO ARTISTS SHOW

The highly anticipated Mayo Artists Show 2021 has opened, spanning both the Linenhall and the Ballina Arts Centre until January 15.

The biannual show sees its first reprisal since the pandemic and is a much needed celebration of visual talent of Mayo and Mayo based artists. It’s also an opportune way to find that perfect Christmas gift for someone special, as it exhibits some of the finest visual artists in Mayo.

The works selected by renowned curator Eamon Maxwell showcase a variety of media and style including work by acclaimed Mayo artist Niamh O’Malley, as an invited artist for 2021 only.

ENTERTAINMENT

Entertainment wise, the Linenhall hosts multiple offerings in the lead-up to the festive season including the Ficino Quartet on Thursday, December 9.

The group regularly performs as a string quartet and shares a dedicated approach to contemporary music. The addition of winds and percussion give the possibility of playing large-scale chamber works.

Cinematically, ‘whodunit’ The Mystery of Henry Pick (Le Mystère Henri Pick) screens at the Linenhall Film Club on Tuesday, December 7, and the final film of 2022 is the delightful Christmas classic It’s a Wonderful Life, on Tuesday, December 14 - a holiday favourite throughout the generations!
