One of the missing manhole covers discovered by Castlebar Tidy Towns volunteers.

Move to get to bottom of Mayo manhole mystery

An elected member of Mayo County Council is bemused by the number of manhole covers being removed in and around Castlebar.

The discovery was made by local Tidy Towns volunteers during a weekend clean-up operation.

Councillor Ger Deere said the removal of manhole covers presented a health and safety risk for the public.

He said: “These actions could have serious consequences for people and it must be stopped.

“It's a bit of a mystery at the moment but I have every intention of getting to the bottom of it.

“I am asking the council to examine the prospect of using our mobile CCTV system to track down those responsible.”

In the meantime, Tidy Towns volunteers have covered in the manholes to make them safe in the short term.
