Councillor slams Mayo town's Christmas tree critics

Criticism over the size of the Christmas tree at Market Square in Castlebar has been slammed by a public representative.

Councillor Ger Deere said there are over 60 trees at public locations with Christmas lights on them in the town and it is wrong for people to criticise the efforts made to make the town as festive as possible.

He hit out: “We are the envy of other towns. Just walk through the Mall, across Market Square or down Main Street.

“We have over 60 trees with lights on them where other towns have only one or two. We should always be promoting the positives of our town.”

Councillor Michael Kilcoyne agreed with Councillor Deere but felt a number of the trees purchased by the council could have been bigger - including the one at Market Square and another at the entrance to Tesco.

"I have received quite a number of complaints," he added.
