Good news on horizon for N26 into north Mayo

THERE appears to be some good news on the horizon for improvements on the N26 into north Mayo.

Two minor works scheme applications are with Transport Infrastructure Ireland, with the critical need for works between Mount Falcon and Foxford discussed with TII at a recent meeting.

Councillor Annie May Reape said the N26 is a 'high priority' with TII and she understood the Taoiseach has given a commitment to start one section of the road, with €100,000 available.

It was a step in the right direction, she told a meeting of Mayo County Council's roads committee this week, with a commitment there and to the new orbital relief route in Ballina town.

It was a slow process but the meeting, she said, was positive.

Director of services Tom Gilligan said they were hopeful of getting positive news on the N26 in the next week or two.

Committee cathaoirleach Councillor Damien Ryan said the N26 has been on the agenda for far too long but it appeared there is positive light on the horizon.

Councillor Seamus Weir said he wants to see the N26 as the top priority in the county development plan.
