Strict close contact rules 'undermining Mayo business sector'
Government rules relating to close contacts of confirmed Covid cases is undermining businesses across Mayo.
That's the view of Castlebar Fine Gael Councillor Cyril Burke.
He said while scanning social media in recent days he observed numerous notices posted by retail and other outlets stating they were closed due to staff members being close contacts - and were unsure when they will be in a position to reopen.
He stated: "The five day self-isolation period for close contacts, and particularly in the case of those who have had their vaccinations and boosters, is placing many shop owners in a very worrying position.
"I have made representations to my party leader, Tanáiste Leo Varadkar, about the matter.
"It is very concerning what's happening because of these strict rules and sad to read of the plight of so many business people at this time of year.
"I appreciate we are facing major challenges in regard to the spread of Omicron.
"But the level of closures due to close contact rules needs to be addressed urgently or we will see shops closing for good."
