Gardaí searching river area for evidence relating to attempted Mayo business robbery

Gardaí in Mayo are searching for evidence relating to an attempted robbery which occurred in Castlebar town centre yesterday afternoon.

Members of the Garda Water Unit have set up operations in the vicinity of the Town River at Market Square car park beside the pedestrian bridge at the rear of the Church of the Holy Rosary.

The area has been cordoned off as the search by sub-aqua drivers for evidence in the river and surrounding area is stepped up.

Sub-aqua search the Castlebar Town River at the rear of the church.

In the meantime, a local man in his early 40s is being questioned at Castlebar Garda Station in relation to the attempted robbery at Rings & Things Jewellery Shop at Main Street in the town yesterday afternoon.

He is being detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.

The man was arrested shortly after leaving the business premises on foot. He has been wearing a hoodie and facemask.

The proprietor of the shop, Peter Sheridan, issued a statement to Midwest Radio in which he expressed relief that nobody was injured during the course of the incident.
