Cora Staunton makes football history in Australia

Former Mayo ladies Gaelic football star Cora Staunton, who still plays for her native Carnacon, once again made history in the early hours of Sunday morning when she lined out for Greater Western Sydney Giants in the new Australian Football League Women’s season.

Now 40 years old, Staunton marked the new season Down Under by lining out for the Giants as the oldest player in the AFLW history.

It was no surprise to anyone to see Staunton very much to the fore in her side's 36-21 victory over Gold Coast Suns in this first round game as she scored two brilliant goals.

It was also a significant occasion for Cora’s very close friend, Brid Stack, as the 35-year-old from Cork made a long-awaited debut for the Giants.

That debut had been delayed by a serious neck injury she sustained last year.
