EirGrid asked to clarify existing and future grid capacity in Mayo

CLARIFICATION has been sought about existing and future grid capacity in Mayo.

It particularly concerns the capacity to deliver power that will be generated by renewable energy projects in the county.

Before Christmas, councillors in north and west Mayo heard concerns about the capacity of the new North Connacht 110 kV powerline, which is expected to come before An Bord Pleanála early in 2022 for planning approval.

Developers behind a proposed north Mayo wind farm told councillors the 100 kV line is nearly at maximum capacity as it is.

They had grave concerns about the grid and especially getting renewable energy projects located in north Mayo connected to the national grid.

Following this, two elected members - Councillor Peter Flynn and Councillor Jarlath Munnelly - tabled a notice of motion requesting Mayo County Council to seek a detailed update from EirGrid at the March monthly meeting regarding existing grid capacity and future grid capacity in Mayo, with reference to expected renewable energy developments across the county.

The motion was before yesterday (Monday) afternoon's meeting of the local authority.
