Councillor Donna Sheridan

Mayo must have seat on board of new university

MAYO must have a seat on the board of the new Technological University for the West and North-West.

There was unanimous support for a motion put forward by Councillor Donna Sheridan calling on Mayo County Council to write to the Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science requesting that an elected member of the council would be a representative on the board of the newly formed TU.

Councillor Sheridan explained that under the legislation, the minister can nominate three members to the board.

"We need additional capital investment for Castlebar, we need industry-led courses, research and development facilities and the reinstatement of the courses we have lost.

"We need to be sitting at that table," she told the monthly meeting of Mayo County Council, to ensure investment for Castlebar and the necessary courses for young people at the campus.
