Claremorris mast extension appealed

PLANS by Vodafone Ireland to extend their telecommunications mast at the Eir Exchange on the Convent Road in Claremorris have been appealed to An Bord Pleanála.

The six-metre extension is proposed to an existing 36-metre support structure, with relocated lightning finials (overall height 43.5m), carrying antennae, dishes and associated equipment for wireless data and broadband services.

The application was made to allow for co-location as the existing structure is not capable of supporting a new operator - eir Mobile, who require a site in the area.

Mayo County Council granted planning permission.

That decision is now under appeal and a decision is due from An Bord Pleanála in early May.

An objection submitted to council planners said the mast at its present height is a considerable eyesore. What was being proposed would be an even greater eyesore and more visually obstructive.
