Mayo emergency unit facing serious overcrowding problems

The emergency department of Mayo University Hospital has today been hit with serious overcrowding problems.

Up to 22 admitted patients are being accommodated in the facility without beds.

That's due to a general shortage of beds at the facility.

A further seven patients are on trolleys awaiting beds in wards.

Nationally, 440 admitted patients are awaiting beds, of which 342 are in emergency departments.
