Renewed attempt to reduce speed limit at Mayo accident black spot

An elected member of Mayo County Council has tabled a motion calling for the speed limit to be reduced through Breaffy village in the interest of safety.

In a motion submitted ahead of next Wednesday's meeting of the Castlebar Municipal District, Councillor Michael Kilcoyne calls on Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) to support the policy of Mayo County Council that the speed limit in Breaffy be reduced to 60 km per hour forthwith.

The motion also appeals to the six Mayo Oireachtas members to support the reduction of the speed limit.

“If the TII fail to agree with our motion, then I will be asking the elected members of this district to escalate the campaign to ensure that the speed limit is reduced to 60 km/h,” he added.

Councillor Kilcoyne's motion expressed sympathy to the family of David Henning, Killawalla, Westport, who lost his life in a recent road traffic accident on the N60 at Breaffy.

Plans had been in train to reduce the limit from 100km/h to 80 km/h - but it is widely felt the lower limit is necessary.
