Blanemore Forest in Moygownagh.

Temporary closure of Blanemore Forest Walk in north Mayo

Blanemore Forest Walk, Moygownagh, will be closed to the public from February 7 for a period of eight to 10 weeks.

Coillte will be temporarily closing the walking trail at Blanemore to facilitate the felling and safe extraction of timber (via the south entrance). Signage will be posted.

According to local historian Liam Heffron, exciting ecological and amenity works will take place after harvesting is finished, including trail structural and safety upgrades, and new seating and picnic areas with improved access.

Meanwhile, 20% of the re-planting will be with native broadleaves (15% oak and 5% birch), mainly along the walking paths.

However, Mr. Heffron warned that walkers should not visit the forest after the February 7 closure as it will be closed to everyone.

“We look forward to seeing you again at the new and improved Blanemore Walk in April,” he concluded.
