€5,027,724 in funding for 45 active travel projects in Mayo
A Mayo TD has received confirmation that the National Transport Authority (NTA) has allocated funding in the amount of €5,027,724 to Mayo County Council in respect of walking and cycling infrastructure.
Deputy Michael Ring stated: “Forty-five Active Travel projects in Mayo will receive funding.
"This funding will bring a renewed vibrancy to our regional towns and villages.
"It is vital that we continue to fund active travel projects. This funding is aimed at making walking and cycling in our villages and towns safe and sustainable."
Welcoming the announcement, Mayo TD Dara Calleary said: "This funding will see investment in each of our municipal areas and involves footpath construction and walking/cycling facilities in many towns and villages throughout the county.
"Included in the schedule of works are footpath plans for many towns and villages, including smaller centres such as Attymass, Bonniconlon, Lahardane and Balla, as well as footpath packages for Ballina, Ballyhaunis, Belmullet, Castlebar, Charlestown, Claremorris, Foxford and Swinford.
"I congratulate Mayo County Council officials and elected representatives for their input into these projects.
"I am pleased to have been able to play my part in securing the funding and I look forward now to seeing each of these projects commencing and being completed without delay."
Deputy Alan Dillon said: “This funding will support the rollout of high-quality active travel infrastructure in rural towns and villages across Mayo.
“This safe and accessible infrastructure will ensure that our local communities are better connected, and that healthier forms of travel continue to become a more attractive choice for the people of Mayo.”
Councillor Ger Deere said he is delighted with the investments earmarked for Castlebar and praised the staff of the local municipal district for putting the various applications together.
