Charlie Bird's Croagh Patrick charity climb raises €172,097 to date
Charlie Bird's charity climb of Croagh Patrick on April 2 has raised €172,097 to date for Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association and Pieta, Ireland’s national suicide prevention charity.
The details are revealed on his website - https://www.climbwithcharlie.ie/ - promoting the event and the amount is increasing on an hourly basis.
A total of 17 climb locations have confirmed so far with 689 participants.
It is being reported that Charlie has a number of 'exciting developments' to announce before the weekend.
Among others joining the legendary reporter on his big hike will be health campaigner Vicky Phelan, former President Mary McAleese, country singer Daniel O’Donnell, Wexford hurling manager Davy Fitzgerald, CNN reporter Donie O’Sullivan, architect Dermot Bannon and RTÉ broadcaster Ryan Tubridy.
Stated Charlie: "My motor neurone disease diagnosis was devastating but I have been overwhelmed by the support I have received from the general public. It’s been a huge source of strength for me and my family.
"I want to use the outpouring of support to help other people suffering with a terminal illness, and those suffering from thoughts of suicide and self-harm.
"Join me in spirit on April 2 as I raise funds for two charities very close to my heart – Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association and Pieta, Ireland’s national suicide prevention charity.
"My hope is that people all over Ireland, indeed all over the world, will get behind me to show support and solidarity with the thousands of people who climb mountains every day due to their physical and mental health challenges.
"I am encouraging anyone who wants to get involved in ‘Climb with Charlie’ to do so in their own area.
"Due to health and safety restrictions and an ongoing conservation project, we are restricted in the numbers who will climb Croagh Patrick on that day, but it would be amazing if you could walk or climb with me in spirit on April 2."
