Traffic calming request at busy west Mayo location
A REQUEST has been made for traffic calming on the road outside the popular Nevin's of Tiernaur.
There is a 60kph speed limit in place at the location but a local councillor feels more needs to be done to slow traffic down.
Councillor Paul McNamara said concern had been brought to his attention about the busy spot on the N59 between Newport and Mulranny.
At times, with greenway traffic and if there was a funeral in the adjacent church, cyclists may have to veer out onto the road for pedestrians, with some passing motorists not adhering to the speed limit.
Speaking at a municipal district meeting, he asked that a traffic survey be done and calming measures put in place to slow traffic down.
Councillor Peter Flynn agreed with his sentiments but felt that, unfortunately, until you had a serious accident or fatality, Transport Infrastructure Ireland would not intervene with traffic calming.
Senior roads engineer Kieran Lynn said the issue will be referred to the head of roads.
