Shane Boland to captain Mayo senior hurlers this year

Mayo senior hurling manager Derek Walsh has announced that Tooreen corner forward Shane Boland will captain the Mayo senior hurlers for the 2022 season.

Boland was phenomenal for his club over for the past 12 months and was instrumental in their run to the AIB GAA All-Ireland intermediate hurling championship semi-final last month. Tooreen eventually lost to Naas in that semi-final after a Titanic battle in Ballinasloe.

Boland has being a regular for Mayo over the past number of years and his deadly accurate free-taking is one of the key factors in their recent success.

In the Nicky Rackard final at Croke Park last July, Boland played a pivotal role, landing three excellent points in their 2-27 to 1-14 win over Tyrone.

Mayo manager Derek Walsh said that Shane is a leader on and off the field. “Shane is one of the most committed and dedicated players in the county and always gives 100% for club and county. He is a role model on and off the field of play and we are very confident he will continue to lead from the front now as captain,” commented Walsh.

Regarding his appointment as captain, Boland said it was a great honour for himself and his club. “Mayo hurling has made great strides in the past two years and we want to build on that momentum now this year,” he elaborated. “We have several new players on the panel this year and training is going well.

“I am really looking forward to the year ahead and hopefully we will continue to be competitive in both league and championship,” concluded Boland.

Mayo play Wicklow tomorrow (Sunday) in their opening Allianz Division 2B National Hurling League game. Throw-in is at 2 p.m. at James Stephens Park, Ballina. Mayo GAA will have regular updates across all of its social media channels. The team that will take to the field can be viewed here.
