Gardaí in Mayo examining footage of street incident
Gardaí in Mayo have launched an investigation into an incident that occurred in Claremorris town centre in the early hours of Sunday morning in which a man was injured.
Footage of the incident has been circulating on social media and reveals graphic images of an alleged assault taking place on Dalton Street.
A complaint has been made to the gardaí about the matter and an appeal has been issued for witnesses to come forward.
Superintendent Gabriel Moran said the investigation involves examining the video images with a view to identifying those responsible.
“We would ask people with footage of the incident not to share it on social media but to forward it to us at Claremorris Garda Station.
“The matter is being taken very seriously and we appeal to anybody with information to make contact with us,” he stated.
Supt. Moran confirmed a person was arrested in respect of a public order offence in Claremorris town centre last Saturday night/Sunday morning – but it did not relate to the incident in question.
The incident occurred following concerns raised in recent weeks of public order offences in the town.
Local Councillor Tom Connolly issued a renewed call for CCTV cameras to be installed in the town centre to tackle the problem.
He told a meeting of the Claremorris Municipal District that the system installed in Ballinrobe has had a major impact in tackling anti-social and public order incidents in the town.
Supt. Moran told The Connaught Telegraph that garda patrols have been escalated in Claremorris as a result of recent incidents.
There are growing concerns that these issues are damaging the good image of the town.
